Spring Camporee 2001
April 27-29, 2001
The whole ball game has
changed!!
But we will have a Camporee. It has been changed to
Travis Air Force Base. Hay, Travis AFB is even closer than Lake Berressa.
The bad news is that there will be no water front activities. The
good news is that there will be water games. BRING YOUR BATHING SUIT AND
TOWEL. YOU "MAY" GET WET. There will still be a short hike in with backpacking equipment.
DRIVERS WILL DROP THE SCOUTS OFF FOR A SHORT HIKE TO THE CAMPOREE AREA.
Parking for drivers who are staying the weekend will be at the camporee
grounds. (DO NOT ALLOW HITCH HIKERS IN, ON, OR UNDER YOU CARS.;-)
Click here to see the map of the new location
on Travis Air Force Base.
| Important information for
ALL
drivers: We must have your name on a list that
is provided to Travis AFB security personnel. If you know you are
going to drive, or think you are going to drive, or know someone who
thinks they know someone who is thinking about driving ;-), give your name

couple nighttime events, pioneering events, and aquatics events. Bring

There are no swimming requirements for this camporee,
but there will be a lot of water...in one form or another.
Remember: This is a backpacking
Camporee; EVERYTHING
You need for the weekend must be carried
into camp on your back. Leather gloves are recommended, and something to
sit on is recommended for Saturday night’s campfire. (I
like a three lagged folding stool. It attaches easily to my
backpack.)
WEBELOS
You are required to put the following items in a yucca
pack (school pack) and carry it into camp with you.
Whistle
Flashlight
Compass
Change of Clothing
Water (1 quart)
Mess Kit
WEBELOS Book
Rain Gear
Personal First Aid Kit
Mountain Money
NOTE: For WEBELOS who have recently crossed over into Boy Scouting. If
the Unit Leader feels this patrol need extra leadership, you may request a
"Staff Guide". This is a person on staff we have selected to
serve as Troop Guide. However we must know prior to the Camporee. If you
have need of this service, or questions regarding this service please
contact Cindy Sanders, 643-8276.

signs and Staff personnel on Ragsdale Street. Assemble you patrols
as a unit to begin the short hike to camp. Upon arrival at the
Camporee Site, each patrol will identify themselves and be assigned a camp
area. The camp will be somewhat primitive. We will have the
comfort of porta-potties and a limited amount of potable water will be
available from "water buffalos". You may want to bring in
some 5 gallon water containers (filled) to start the weekend.
NOTE: Everything you need for the weekend shall be
backpacked in, simulating a backpacking trip.
WEBELOS:
WEBELOS ARE NOT REQUIRED TO BACKPACK THEIR EQUIPMENT, BUT WILL BE
REQUIRED TO CARRY A DAY PACK WITH A SPECIFIED LIST OF ITEMS. THEY WILL
WALK TO THEIR CAMPSITE AS A PATROL.) (IF A WEBELOS PATROL NEEDS TO HAVE
SOME EQUIPMENT TAKEN TO THEIR CAMPSITE, IT CAN BE BROUGHT IN BY CAR OR
TRUCK. (THIS IS FOR WEBELOS ONLY)
CHECK IN:
A patrol should check in as a patrol, with all of its
members present. You may check in as early as 6:00 P.M. or as late as 9:00
P.M. From this point on the Senior Patrol Leader will be in charge of the
unit. NOTE: There will be a PLC meeting at 9:30
P.M. The opening Campfire begins at 10:00 P.M.
ALL VEHICLES will be required to park in
the designated parking area.
CAMPSITES:
Each patrol will receive their campsite assignment at
the registration area. You will camp as a Patrol but in a designated Troop
site. Troops will function under the direction of their Senior Patrol
Leader. Adult leadership will be advised of their unit’s location but
will camp in the designated adult camping area. A staff member will escort
the patrol from registration through Uniform/Pack Inspection, Patrol Flag
Judging, and on to their campsite. Water is available from "water
buffalos" (all you have to do is catch one ;-). Showers are not available. Patrols need to bring
containers for the transporting and storage of water. DISHWASHING AND THE

|
GARBAGE:
Bring you own garbage bags! You must take all of your garbage with you
when you leave camp!!! There are no garbage cans available! Bag and take
with you all of your own garbage!!! Leave No Trace.
Bring a strainer to strain your dishwater of food particles.
We do not want to dump garbage on the ground. Put the strained
garbage in your garbage bag.
FIRES:
There will be no fires at the patrol/troop sites.
All cooking will be done on camp stoves. The only fire allowed
will be the evening campfire.
STOVES:
You are expected to bring and use your own backpacking
stoves. They shall be used in accordance with BSA guidelines. There should
be no need for extra fuel as your backpacking stove should hold enough
fuel for the weekend. (WEBELOS may use Coleman stoves
under the guidance of their adult leaders).
FIRST AID:
First Aid is available at Camporee Base Camp. Each patrol/troop should
have a first aid kit as part of their patrol equipment. Remind your Scoutmaster to bring your patrol’s medical record to the
Camporee, they are very important should you require a trip to the
hospital.
NOTE: Permission slips
and medical records should be in posession of troop and patrol Scouters
attending the Camporee in case of an emergency.
UNIFORMS:
We are scouts. This is a scout event. Proper uniforms
are expected. Class A Uniform is appropriate for Friday night, Saturday
assembly, Campfire, Sunday assembly, and Scouts Own. Class B uniform is
appropriate for the rest of your Camporee experience.
ITEMS OF CLOTHING WITH ANY "MESSAGE" OTHER
THAN SCOUTING ARE NOT PERMITTED!!!
CONDUCT:
Every Scout is expected to conduct himself in a "Scout Like"
manner, living up to the Scout Oath and Law. Adhere to the Outdoor Code,
staying within the boundaries of camp and on designated roads and trails.
Keep bathrooms and showers clean. Put trash in bags and take it home with
you! Respect other patrols and be quiet after Taps. Inappropriate conduct
will result in the Scout and his Patrol Leader being referred to the
Camporee Scoutmaster for appropriate action and a loss of points to the
patrol. This is a military base. It is very important for all
people attending the Camporee to remain in the designated Camporee
area. Wondering around can get you shot. At a minimum, you
will be sent home immediately.

CAMPFIRE:
Saturday night’s campfire will be a skit and songs put on by SOME
patrols. Class "A" uniform and a flashlight are appropriate for
the campfire, and we will assemble at 7:00 P.M. at the waterfront campfire
circle. BRING SOMETHING TO SIT ON, BUT NOT A CHAIR!!!
A three legged camp stool works great.
VISITORS:
The Camporee is open to visitors. Family and friends
are invited to attend and observe your patrol in action! Visitors
attending the campfire are asked to bring lawn chairs and find seating at
the rear of the campfire circle. We must know ahead of time so
they can be put on the guest list.
PATROL SITE INSPECTIONS:
Patrol sites will be inspected periodically during the Camporee. Patrol
equipment, organization, commissary and food, safety, and campsite
organization will be scored.
TRADING POST:
A trading post will be available Saturday with a wide variety of snack
items. The Trading Post will be open Saturday from 10:00 AM until 5:00 PM.
CHECK OUT:
If your patrol must leave early, please notify the Camporee Senior
Patrol Leader in advance. The last page of this guidebook is a Camporee
Evaluation Form. When you are ready to check out, the Patrol Leader will
bring this form to Camporee Base Camp, and give it to a staff member. He
will then follow you to your campsite and inspect it for cleanliness. If
your campsite is clean and neat, he will sign the form to receive your
patches and depart.
ADULT SCOUTER PROGRAM:
Scouters are here to supervise and observe. Scouters and visitors are
not permitted to coach patrols on any event, or they will lose points. The
Patrol Leader should lead the Patrol during the Camporee.
NOTE: An adult program
will be provided for all Unit leadership on Saturday.
We may need some additional assistance for some of the events.
ORDER OF THE ARROW:
There will be an OA Callout at Saturday night’s campfire. (Consult
your local Aponuc for Help) A Cracker Barrel will follow the Callout.

LIST OF
SATURDAY EVENTS
(IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER)
BALL LAUNCH
The patrols will have a catapult and several balls. The object
is to place a ball in the target zone.
100 points for putting a ball inside the canoe, 75 points for getting
the into the canoe but it bounces out, 50 points for hitting the occupant,
25 points for getting a ball inside the lighted area.
1st AID RESCUE
Each patrol will come upon a victim. The victim must be loaded
correctly onto a backboard, and remove them from the accident site to a
pick up point some distance away. This is a challenging event! Correct
procedure and teamwork, not speed is essential!
This is a timed event. 100 points if you get the victim safely to the
pick up point, 50 points for teamwork, and 25 points for patrol spirit.
IMPROPER CAMPSITE
The patrol will travel to a campsite. They will have 60 seconds to look
at the campsite and then leave. They will then be asked to accurately
describe what was wrong with the campsite.
This event is worth 100 points for observation, 50
points for teamwork, and 25 points for patrol spirit.
WALL CLIMB
The patrol will be required to get everyone in the
patrol over a 12-foot wall using only the members of the patrol. (EXCEPTION:
WEBELOS may use a height aid)
This event is a timed event. 50 points will be awarded
for teamwork, and 25 points for patrol spirit.
CATAPULT FIRE DOUSE
Using a catapult and water balloons the patrol will attempt to douse
(extinguish) a small fire. The patrol will initially receive 4 water
balloons. Upon returning the pieces of the balloons, additional balloons
may be obtained. 8 WATER BALLOONS MAXIMUM per patrol.
This is a timed event. 100 points for dousing the fire, 50 points for
teamwork, and 25 points for patrol spirit.
HIT THE BUCKET
2 Patrols will compete in this event. The first patrol
designates a member to stand on a bucket with a cricket bat. The second
patrol forms a very large circle around the bucket. Using a tennis ball a
member of the second patrol throws the tennis ball in an attempt to hit
the bucket, while the person on the bucket tries to hit the ball. If the
ball is struck, where it lands is where the next throw must originate. If
the ball is missed by the bat and strikes the bucket, the thrower becomes
the batsman as the patrols exchange places.
This is a timed event. 10 points for each time the
bucket is struck, 50 points for teamwork, and 25 points for patrol spirit.
COOKING COMPETITION
Each patrol should bring one tablespoon of their
Saturday night main course to the Camporee Base Camp, No Later Than 6:00
PM Saturday for judging. The entry should also include their menu for the entire
Camporee and a breakdown of the cost per each patrol member.

RUBBER RAFT JOUST (on Lake Travis ;-))
Two patrols compete in this event. Two members of the
patrol will board a two-man rubber raft. One is the rower and the second
is the Jouster. The rafts will proceed to the jousting area where they
will try to knock each other into the water using pugle sticks. Bathing
suits are highly recommended. Life jackets will not be
required. Rubber duckys are optional.
This is a timed event. 10 points for each successful
joust, 50 points for teamwork, and 25 point for patrol spirit.
HARPOON THE WHALE
It will happen, but the rules are a
changin.
Two patrols compete in this event. Each patrol will put
three members into the canoe. Two will paddle and the other is the
harpooner. On a given signal the two patrols will paddle out to the whale,
harpoon it and then attempt to tow it back to their side. After three
minutes the patrol may launch a second canoe, containing three more
members, to help their original canoe. After three more minutes the event
is over if no one has successfully towed the whale to his side.
This is a timed event. 100 points if you beach the
whale, 50 points for teamwork, and 25 points for patrol spirit.
DRY LAND CANOE RACE (It
could happen...and it will!)
It will happen, but the rules are a changin.
The patrol will board the raft; on a given signal they will pull
themselves across the river to the opposite shore. Upon reaching the shore
one members of the patrol must disembark, run up the hill, ring the bell,
re-embark the raft, and pull themselves back to the starting point.
This is a timed event. 50 points will be given for teamwork, and 25
points for patrol spirit.
BUCKET BRIGADE
More information to follow
PUSH THE KEG
This is a new game. Bring your bathing suit. It involves
water, fire hoses, and coordination. I think it has something to do
with a keg suspended from a cable between two telephone poles. Your
job is to move it to the other end. It is also you opponents job to
move it to your end of the cable. I see a lot of water in this
event.
UNZIP LINE
The objective is to don a climbing harness, which will be
safety checked by a staff member. Then buckle on to the zip line and
be hoisted to the top by your patrol, ring the bell at the top of the pole
and return to the ground in a standing position.
