High Adventure Backpacking
Silver Gate District

Boy Scouts of America

Silver Gate District will again be sponsoring a 5-day High Adventure Backpacking trek this summer, June 30th through July 4th 2000

Explore a small portion of the California High Sierra's on a 5 day backpacking expedition. Experience the thrill of climbing mountains over 7000 feet high! Learn technical backpacking techniques, and experience the thrill of our historical high Sierra gold country. Explore the by gone days of the old mine operations. Observe the rush of Sierra streams and rivers, or peaceful mountain lakes. This trek is designed to allow you all the FUN you can muster, expose you to other scouts from the Silver Gate District who share in similar interests of the greater outdoors, and desire to be able to just go and do it in the dirt. There will be ample opportunity for you to hike, explore places you've only heard of, swim, and give you the chance to climb to the mountain tops you've only dreamed of.

Already there has been great interest in this District backpacking event. Due to the interest, registration is restricted to keep the event participation to a manageable group size. The following information is provided for you in placing your reservation to attend. Use the attached form to register.

Expedition trek date: June 30th through July 4th, 2000

1. Scouts must be First Class in rank. Age requirement will be 14 years old or having completed 8th grade prior to participation. Exceptions to this will only be considered if individuals can show evidence of previous scout, long term backpacking experience.

2. This trek will be over 5 days (4 nights). Travel arrangements to and return from the Sierra’s will be decided upon at a later date.

3. A $20.00 deposit will be required to secure your reservation. The deposit is non-refundable. The remainder of funds will be payable at a later date in June when final budgetary issues are resolved. It is anticipated this Sierra trek will cost an estimated $50.00, excluding travel to and return from the trailhead.

4. Group size: Crew size shall be in multiples of 7 (including 1 adult per crew). Reservation will accepted on a first come first serve basis. Adult leader reservations will be based upon experience, be 21 years of age, and in top physical condition. If you have any interest in going on this trek do not hesitate to sign up. Late registration will not be considered once registration is closed.

5. Participation for this high Sierra trek will require previous participation in backpacking events, through Scouting or elsewhere. It is unclear whether time will allow for a "shake out" campout prior to the July trek. However, it is necessary all participants are prepared and have developed the necessary outdoor skills to allow the most enjoyable experience for all participants. Class 3, BSA medical forms (or Philmont medical) are required.
