High Adventure Backpacking Boy Scouts of America Trek: Tahoe National Forest, Near Emigrant Pass, CA (off Interstate 80, north of Emigrant Pass and Cisco Grove.) Trek Leader: Tom Harryman (707)745-8120 Parking will be approximately 20 miles off Interstate 80 deep in the Sierra’s. We anticipate being in elevations between 5600 to 7000 feet. Overall elevation in the area where we will be is 6000 to 7200 feet. It can be anticipated that during the day after we have reached camp we will take day hikes and "bag" various peaks of the area. There is no access via motor vehicle in the area where we will be backpacking. Accordingly we need to be concerned about the carrying weight of each participant. In addition to your son/daughter’s personal gear and clothing, they will be expected to carry crew group gear and food. Packs will weigh approximately 25% to 30% of his normal body scale weight. For example, if a person weighs 120 lb., his pack could weigh as much as 36 lb. For the lighter people, weight will be a problem and the 25-30% rule may be exceeded. Scout/Scouter Weight ___________________ 25% = _____ 30% = ______ This backpacking event is open to all Venturers/Scouts/Explorers/Advisors desiring to participate. However, due to the terrain and anticipated requirements of the trek, all participants who desire to participate must realistically be able to complete the 5-day trek with little of no assistance from others. Due to timing there is no prerequisite hikes. However, the trek leader reserves final decision for participation to assure your sons (or your own) safety, and to assure the challenges anticipated for this high Sierra trek can be met from all participating. Hiking boots and backpacks are required for this event . Weight will be added to all packs at the trailhead related to crew equipment and food.Remember, CLASS B’s ARE REQUIRED to travel in. Suggested Personal Gear: Hiking Shoes!!!!!!! (Preferably 6 inch height) First Aid supplies will be provided to the Backpacking Crew. Other items which are provided by the Crew are; backpacking stoves, trail chef kits, water pumps, camp water jugs, shovel, and fuel bottles. And of course, food for the five-day event. Dependent upon personal gear and its weight, other items to consider are 20-30 feet of light nylon rope, candy and snacks, Walkman, playing cards, reading material. Yes, Walkman’s are allowed until the advisor hears music. Then the privilege is lost to its owner. There will be a pack check before we leave Benicia on Friday. Food and group gear will be assigned prior to leaving and weigh in. |
