SUNOL BACKPACK AREA

The Sunol Wilderness is accessed off of the Calaveras Road exit on 680, just as you hit the valley before the famous Sunol grade on 680. Take Calaveras Road south and follow it to the park entrance.

This is a rather strenuous hike, with quite a bit of uphill. However, the views and the location are well worth it.

Reservations can be made by calling the East Bay Regional Park District at 510-635-5502, or check out their website at www.ebparks.org. Following is a brief copy from the website for this camp:

A permit is required to camp overnight in these designated backpack camps. A group site is available. Obtain a new permit before each trip. Camping is by reservation only; phone (510) 636-1684 for details. The fee is $5 per day per person. The backpack area is open year round.

We had a total of 12 scouts and scouters. As always, an approved tour permit is required for this camp.
